Black August

From Resistance to Power

This August, Black Clarksville joins communities across the country in observing Black August—a month dedicated to honoring the resilience, resistance, and ongoing struggle for Black liberation. Rooted in the experiences of Black freedom fighters and political activists, Black August began as a time to remember those who sacrificed their lives and freedom in the pursuit of justice, dignity, and self-determination.

Today, Black August serves as both a time of remembrance and a call to action. It invites us to reflect on the history of Black resistance, celebrate the strength and achievements of our communities, and recommit ourselves to building a more just and equitable future. It is a reminder that the fight for civil rights, voting rights, economic opportunity, and community empowerment did not end with previous generations—it continues today.

At Black Clarksville, we believe that learning our history, supporting one another, and taking meaningful action are powerful ways to continue the legacy of those who came before us.

Whether you're attending your first Black August event or have observed this tradition for years, we invite you to join us. Together, we remember. Together, we celebrate. Together, we organize, educate, and build a stronger community for generations to come.
