Black August

This August, Black Clarksville joins communities across the country in observing Black August—a month dedicated to honoring the resilience, resistance, and ongoing struggle for Black liberation. Rooted in the experiences of Black freedom fighters and political activists, Black August began as a time to remember those who sacrificed their lives and freedom in the pursuit of justice, dignity, and self-determination.

Today, Black August serves as both a time of remembrance and a call to action. It invites us to reflect on the history of Black resistance, celebrate the strength and achievements of our communities, and recommit ourselves to building a more just and equitable future. It is a reminder that the fight for civil rights, voting rights, economic opportunity, and community empowerment did not end with previous generations—it continues today.

At Black Clarksville, we believe that learning our history, supporting one another, and taking meaningful action are powerful ways to continue the legacy of those who came before us.

Whether you're attending your first Black August event or have observed this tradition for years, we invite you to join us. Together, we remember. Together, we celebrate. Together, we organize, educate, and build a stronger community for generations to come.

The People's Party: Black August Kickoff

Join Black Clarksville as we kick off Black August with The People's Party—a free community celebration centered on connection, culture, and collective power.

Black August reminds us that building strong communities is an act of resistance. That's why we're bringing people together for an afternoon filled with good food, great music, meaningful conversations, and resources that help us strengthen our community and our democracy.

Enjoy FREE food and drinks while supplies last, hear from inspiring community speakers, get a free haircut, learn about upcoming elections, discover ways to get civically involved, and connect with organizations making a difference right here in Clarksville. Whether you're looking to volunteer, register to vote, meet your neighbors, or simply enjoy a day with your family, there's something for everyone.

Hosted at Eagle Rest Pavilion, the venue offers the perfect setting for a community celebration, featuring a large covered pavilion, a playground, basketball court, football field, and plenty of free parking. Bring your kids, invite your friends, and spend the day celebrating the strength of our community.

Black August is a time to honor our history while investing in our future. The People's Party is our way of doing both—creating space for joy, building relationships, and empowering one another to make a difference.

Because joy is resistance, and the people are the power.
